May 31,was created by WHO, in 1987
2 The harmful effects of smoking
on human health and ageing
are undeniable.
3. Commercial interests in tobacco are
directly at odds with goal of achieving
healthy longevity for all .
4 In 2019 approximately 7.69million deaths
and 200millions Disability --Adjusted
Life Years (DALYs) were attributable to
Smoking tobacco use.
5 Major smoking related causes of death and
Disability include ischaemic heart disease
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease;
Tracheal Bronchial,and Lung cancer;
and stroke .
6 Smoking is also important risk factor
for dementia and strongly associated
With fraility (Weakness of person's
Body or character) in middle -aged
and old adults .
7. Smoking Rates : decreased by 27.5%
in men and 37.7% in women between
Year 1990 and 2019.
8. The estimated current smokers world wide
was 1.14 Billion people compared with
0.99 billion in 1990.
9 WHO convention on tobacco treaty
was introduced in year 2005
The 185 ratifying countries have agreed
to implement several anti tobacco
Measures such as new taxation on tobacco
Products ,advertising bans ,public health
Campaigns and smoking cessation
Programmes .
10. The 2021 global progress report
highlights that although 85% of
signatory countries have implemented
Article 8 (protection from exposure to
Tobacco smoke ) However
Only 13% have implemented article
17( Provision of support to economically
viable alternative activities )
11 Tobacco is not only industry whose
Commercial interests pose major
Obstacle to health and healthy ageing .
Other industries high highlighted in
the Lancet series include alcohol
Ultra --processed foods and fossil fuels
WHO estimate that harmful use of
alcohol caused 3million deaths and
132.6 million DALYs globally in year 2016
As with smoking alcohol misuse is a risk factor for dementia.
12. Ultra processed foods , defined as those with formulations mostly industrial
Processes are associated with high
morbidity and mortality from
Cardiovascular disease , dementia and
Other adverse health outcomes .
13 The harms from fossil fuels come
From air pollution to the wider
Effects of climate change.
