Yes it was great news
Pig heart genetically modified was used In patient
Mr David Bennet age 57 years With life threatening condition needing heart lung machine
To stay alive.
Cadever heart from accidental death was on great demand .
So cardiac surgeon from USA Dr Bartley Griffith
Suggested use of genetically modified Pig Heart
To his patient Mr David Mr David said " Yes doctor
I am ready I want to live."
Operation was 8hours long on Friday 7th Jan2022
It was first successful operation.
What was genetically modified Pig
Two important changes required first gene
Modified so that heart will not grow
Secondly human 4genes were transfer to
Pig's genome so that human immunological
Reaction may not reject pig heart.
We all know the first human to human transplant
Was performed in the year 1967 December 3rd
By Dr Christian Barnard
Great south African doctor
I was fortunate to listen his lecture at our college
Seth G S Medical Mumbai parel
He introduce with a great remark "I have operated
Many hearts but I have yet to look a Black heart "
Mr David operation was different called as
Xenotransplantation
What does it mean
Xenotransplantation is the process of transplantation of live organs tissues or cells from
A non human animal into a human.
History
Year 1667 Blood from lambs to human
1905 Rabbit kidney to human
1920 to1990
Non human primates were used
Several trials involving kidneys heart liver
To human
Non human primates are phylogenetically
Closer to human.
Difficulties non human primates transmission of
Infections
Organ size and breading difficulties.
Since 1990 Pig is currently most appropriate
Advantages for using Pig
Large litter size short maturation time
Redially application of genetic engineering
Techniques to produce pig organs
Resistant to rejection.
