Homocysteine Blood Test

 Homocysteine

Blood   Test

Homocystine  first described in 1932

By Butz and du Vigneaud .
Homocystine (Hcy) is a sulphur containg amino

Acid that is closely related to essential amino acid methionine and cysteine.

Folic acid vitamin B12 and Vitamin B6 are essential in maintaining normal Hcy levels.

Fasting Ref(1) blood is taken for Hcy test.
Normal range 5 to 15micro mol/L

16 to 30  micromole moderate

31 to 100 micrro mol e intermediate

Above 100 micromole severe

Hyperhomocystenemia rise  due to deficiencies

Of folate vitamin B12 and Vitamin B6.

Hyperhomocystenemia is observed in

1 Cardiovascular disease

2 Heart attack

3 Hypertension

4 stroke

5 coronary heart disease

6  Atherosclerosis

McCully in 1969  first reported hyper homocystenemia  in atherosclerosis.

Ref (2)Allan D Kaye et al 2020
Reported folic acid supplementation
In patients with elevated homocysteine levels.

Folic acid 0.5 --- 5mg typically lowers
Plasma homocysteine by approximately

25%

Folic acid may likely reduced vascular disease

Folic acid supplementation should be recommended to any patient who has an
Elevated homocysteine levels.
In the early 1990s Homocysteine become
A recognized risk factor for atherosclerotic disease . For atherosclerotic disease Homocysteine levels greater than 15 micromoles/ L
