Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson's Disease:

First medically described by James Parkinson in 1817.
PD  is the second most common age related neurodegenerative disorder after Alzheimer's disease.

Incidence: 7-10 million people have

PD .world wide.

Age: Usual Onset age over 60 years.

How Parkinson's Develops:

Dopamine is essential for body movements

Dopamine is secreted by neurons of

Mid brain's region called substantia nigra
These neurons degenerate resulting in reduction in dopamine secretion this neurodegenerative disease is Parkinson's disease. Degenerated nerves show Levy bodies.

Parkinson's disease Causes : Idiopathic definite cause not known

Yet.

Risk Factors:

1)Old age
2) Exposure to pesticides, herbicides and
     Cleaning Chemicals
  3) magnese breathing

   4) Family History
     5) Gene mutation

Early signs : 1)Reduced sense of

Smell  called hyposmia  may affect more than 95%of PD Lewy bodies have been captured in the nasal epithelium .

     2)Anxiety depression

       3) Sleep dysregulation
         4) constipation

       Late signs of PD

        1) Shakyness of hand or finger
         2) Stiffnesss of  arm or leg
         3) Slow down movement
          4) Problems with balance
           5)Constipation

Treatment : Dopamine is required but due to blood brain barrier dopamine cannot get entry

The drug Levodopa gets entry and converts
Into dopamine in brain.

But mostly for better results Levodopa is given along with carbodopa.
