Diabetes &Risk Factors

Diabetes &Risk Factors

Multiple risk factors of diabetes mellitus

Delayed Diagnosis until micro & macro

Vascular complications arise

The prevalence of Type 2 DM has been increasing exponentially .
Type 1 diabetes is insulin dependent diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes the most common type

Accounts for 90--–95% of all diabetics patients
Expected to 439 million by 2030

       Diabetics Risk Factors

1)Genetic component

Higher concordance rates are found in mono
Zygotic 96%
40% of first degree relatives of T2DM patients
Type 2 diabetes patients may develop diabetes
Where as only 6% incident rate found in the general population .

2) Lifestyle factor correlation

    Sedentary life style
    Physical inactivity
    Smoking
    Alcohol consumption
Obesity : most important risk factor
For T2DM which may influence the
    Development of insulin resistance
   And disease progression.
    Nearly 90% of diabetic patients
Develop T2DM mostly relating  to excess
Body weight obesity is strongly inherited.
Diet : Modifiable  risk factors for T2DM
Low fiber diet with a higher risk of T2DM
    Frequent consumption of processed meat
But not other meats.May increase risk
    Of T2DM .
Soft drinks increases risk of T2DM
Vitamin D may have a potential role
     In the control of DM

      Complications :

         1 Microvascular disease (
            Hypertension

          Hyperlipidemia
          Heart attacks
           Coronary Artery Disease
           Strokes
            Cerebral vascular Disease
             Peripheral vascular Disease)

        2.       Microvascular Disease
                  ( Retinopathy
                   Nephropathy
                    Neuropathy)
