Kidney Function Test (Serum Creatinine )

     Kidney Function Test (Serum Creatinine)

The kidneys are the waste management  system of the body ,removing excess fluid

and toxins from the blood stream and filtering them into urine .

If kidney function is significantly reduced and patient develops ,ESRD End Stage

.          Renal Disease.This.situatiom is life threatening and kidney transplant or regular

          dialysis treatments  are.only options.

To understand the Serum creatinine test ,we should know few terms first what is

Serum ? The serum is the fluid and solute component of blood after clotting.

         What is creatinine ?

Creatinine is breakdown product of muscle metabolism in the body .Measuring serum

Creatinine is useful method of evaluating  kidney dysfunction .

Renal(kidney) dysfunction diminishes the ability to filter creatinine and thus Serum

         Creatinine rises.

If serum creatinine  level doubles , the GFR Glomerular filtration rate considered

To have been halved .A three fold increase of creatinine increased is consider to

Reflect a 75%  loss of kidney function .

              Reference values Serum Creatinine

                Adult Males.     0.8-1.4mg/deci liter

                Females.           0.6-1.1mg/deci liter

Values are slightly higher in.males as they have larger muscle mass

            To  know what is Glomerulus

Each kidney is having 1million  functional small units called nephron ,

Functional unit starts with filter called Glomerulus

                    Ends with tubule.
